An Afghan police officer shot dead five of his colleagues Monday, an official said, the latest in a string of attacks by members of the security forces on their own men or foreign allies.

The shooter, identified as Dur Mohammad, the head of a police post in the northern
province of Jawzjan was believed to have joined the Taliban insurgents after the deadly shooting, provincial police chief Abdul Aziz Ghairat said.

"He shot dead five of his colleagues and fled and joined the Taliban," Ghairat said.

The gunman and victims were part of the Afghan Local Police (ALP), a US-backed community police force tasked with guarding Afghan villages against Taliban attacks.

The incident comes on the day a female Afghan police officer killed a foreign adviser in the capital Kabul.

Attacks by members of the Afghan national security forces trained and equipped by the US-led NATO force has increased this year, raising concerns about Taliban infiltration into the NATO-trained security forces.

The insider attacks, known as "green-on-blue" in military jargon, have seriously undermined trust between NATO forces and their local allies in the fight against the Taliban insurgents waging an insurgency since 2001.
