President Barack Obama has backed the top US commander in Afghanistan, General John Allen, after the general was dragged into the sex scandal that brought down CIA director David Petraeus.
General Allen is being investigated for exchanging emails with one of the two women linked to the
The FBI found emails between Allen and Jill Kelly, the woman targeted by Petraeus’s mistress. Allen was scheduled to take over as head of the US European command and Supreme Commander of Nato. That has been put on hold now.
Kelly is an unpaid social organiser known for hosting parties attended by military officials from the US central command based in Tampa, Florida, where she lives. She got to know Petraeus and his wife during his posting there. No details were available, however, of how she met Allen.
The FBI agent who launched the probe into threatening emails sent to Kelly by Petraeus’s mistress Paula Broadwell, is also being investigated.
Kelly received half a dozen anonymous emails earlier this year cautioning her on Petraeus. Rattled, she went to a friend — this FBI agent. Those mails to Kelly led the FBI to Broadwell, whose mails led the investigators to an exchange of mail of an explicit nature with a sender later identified as Petraeus.
