Freedom of speech is so deeply enshrined in the United States Constitution there is no way of stopping people burning Qurans in public, as a group of evangelicals plans to do on Saturday.
The First Amendment prohibits the making of any law that infringes on the right of American citizens
to express themselves freely or peaceably assemble.
It is jealously guarded as an inviolable tenet of American society and the United States Supreme Court has in the past protected flag-burners and even the right of the Ku Klux Klan to torch crosses.
So while many Americans are angry and have expressed outrage at Pastor Terry Jones and his small band of evangelicals, there is nothing the authorities can do to stop the event from taking place.
