Career diplomat, Wei Wei, has been appointed as the new ambassador of China to India. He has replaced Zhang Yan who was the Chinese envoy to India for more than four years.

Wei, who is waiting to present his credentials to President Pranab Mukherjee, reached New Delhi earlier this
month but the formal announcement was only made Wednesday. He was the Chinese ambassador to Singapore before his appointment to India.

Earlier, he has served in various capacities across Africa including Kenya, Ethiopia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

"Chinese President Hu Jintao has appointed a new ambassador to India, according to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) on Wednesday…"

Hu made the appointment in line with a decision made by the Standing Committee of the NPC, China's top legislature,” state-run Xinhua reported Wednesday evening.
