A new research has held the European Union responsible for fuelling the obesity epidemic in the 27 member countries across the continent.
The study found that because of lower import tariffs, the member states have higher supplies of red meat and dairy products compared to
non-members; these states also place lower prices on calorie-laden goods, increasing the risk of obesity, the ‘Daily Mail’ reported.
“After entering the EU, the prices of meat and milk products were reduced in Germany, Italy, France, and Portugal.
As a result of these lower prices consumption increased and the EU citizens put on weight,” Pedro Marques-Vidal from Lausanne University in Switzerland, who led the study, said.
