A Portuguese engineer who was kidnapped in southwestern Nigeria was released after spending three weeks in captivity, his family and Portuguese officials have said, according to Lusa news agency. Jose Luis Rosa, an engineer with the construction firm Picolo, had been working on a road
project in Ondo state when he was kidnapped by armed men on February 7.

"We have already talked to him and he's doing well," his daughter Ana Filipa told Lusa, on Wednesday.

She did not know if a ransom was paid for his release. "I do not know anything, but I think so," Filipa said.

The office of the secretary of state for Portuguese communities confirmed the man's release, but it did not say how he was freed.

Nigeria has seen an upsurge in kidnappings of local and expatriate workers in the past three years, mostly by criminal groups seeking ransom money or for political reasons.
