Police found explosive devices and weapons in a Florida university dormitory room early on Monday after a man was killed by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounded, the university said.

Hundreds of students were evacuated from the Florida Central University, which was closed
down after the discovery, the university in Orlando, Florida said in a statement.

The situation began unfolding at about 12:20am (04:20GMT) when campus police received a fire alarm call from the university's Tower 1 residence hall.

"While responding to that call, police received a 911 call regarding a man with a gun. When police arrived, they found a victim who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," the university said.

"Tower 1 was evacuated, and Parking Garage G was closed. As investigators reviewed the scene they found a handgun, an assault weapon and IEDs," it said.

As police investigated, the university closed its main campus.

Grant Heston, a spokesman for the university, told CNN that a bomb squad from the county sheriff's office, the FBI and police were working to safely remove the explosive devices. It was unclear how many there were.

"I can tell you that they were found inside a bag in one of the dorm rooms," Heston said.
