Prosecutors are asking a federal judge to give the maximum 30-year sentence to a Chicago businessman convicted of supporting a terrorist group that staged the deadly 2008 attacks in Mumbai.

US prosecutors made the request in a filing on Monday evening in the case of Tahawwur Rana.
He was convicted in 2011 of aiding terrorism in Denmark and aiding a terrorist group that staged the Mumbai attacks that left more than 160 people dead.

Jurors convicted Rana of supporting a never-carried-out plot to attack a Danish newspaper that printed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad and for supporting the Pakistani group. They cleared him of involvement in that group's attack in Mumbai.

Rana is to be sentenced in Chicago on Thursday.
