An Indian labourer, who was in a coma for several weeks following a road accident in Saudi Arabia, has died, according to the Indian mission in Jeddah.

Rajinder, 26, from Andhra Pradesh, was hit by a fast moving car on January 5 while crossing a street in Najran, said SD Moorthy,
consul welfare at the Indian consulate in Jeddah.

Moorthy said the Rajinder went from Riyadh to Najran because his company had won a new construction contract in that part of the Kingdom.

"From the Intensive Care Unit, Rajinder was transferred to the general ward (of King Khalid Hospital in Najran) on Monday night, since he opened his eyes indicating signs of further improvement in his health condition," Moorthy said.

"We contacted the family of the deceased to make the repatriation arrangements. In deference to their wishes, the body will be sent to India," Moorthy added.

Moorthy said he was in touch with Rajinder's sponsor for compensation for the family of the deceased.

The police tracked down the hit-and-run driver, a 22-year-old Saudi, and have remanded him until the inquiry is over.
