As Sarabjit Singh fights for his life, authorities at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail are yet to charge the five inmates who attacked him or start a proper investigation.
The Indian death row convict was attacked in a prison courtyard on Friday as he took his daily walk with his warders. The five men attacked him with sticks, stones, knives, iron rods and pieces of a ghee tin following an argument, eyewitnesses said.
The warders haven’t yet been called to testify. Jail officials said Singh had provoked his assailants but, privately, some of them also admitted that the Indian was withdrawn and hardly spoke to anyone.
Singh’s lawyer, Awais Shaikh, told reporters he feared the attack may have been deliberate as his client was always at threat.
