Former Prime Minister and Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) vice-chairman Baburam Bhattarai on Saturday, surprised all by resigning from all party posts.

“Instead of giving advice to others it’s essential for senior leaders in higher positions to set example through sacrifice,” Bhattarai told the party’s ongoing central committee meeting.

The meeting, which was to allot posts following the party’s convention in Hetauda earlier this year, has been witnessing obstacles over many seeking senior positions.

Many have openly voiced resentment against chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda on the names suggested by him for senior posts and membership of standing committee, central committee and politburo.

Former Peoples Liberation Army commanders have boycotted the meeting and a senior Madhesi leader who joined the party recently threatening to quit. Bhattarai’s resignation is believed to be an effort to stem such discontent.

A meeting of the party’s office-bearers on Sunday urged Bhattarai to reconsider his decision.
