Don’t be surprised if Sourav Ganguly turns up at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) 80th annual general meeting in Mumbai on September 24 as a representative of the Tripura Cricket Association (TCA).

The former India captain has shown an interest in joining the administration. He attended the Cricket Association of Bengal’s (CAB) AGM in July and has become a member of its working committee.

This is widely interpreted as a sign of Ganguly’s long-term ambition of becoming the BCCI president in 2014, when it will be East Zone’s turn to nominate a candidate from one of the five units in the region — Assam, Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa and Tripura.

Because the BCCI constitution demands certain pre-requisites (see box) for a person to be eligible for the president’s post, Ganguly has to act in advance. And because the CAB under Jagmohan Dalmiya is unlikely to send him to the AGM, he has to look for alternatives.

Ganguly attended the TCA’s annual prize distribution function in Agartala on Sunday and even though top officials of the association couldn’t be contacted, sources said he might represent them at the AGM this year.

“It’s possible. He spent a lot of time speaking to TCA secretary Arindam Ganguly (a BCCI vice-president himself). The TCA is in the good books of the BCCI and therefore anti-Dalmiya. It might help Sourav if Dalmiya doesn’t let him attend the AGM as a CAB representative,” said a source. Arindam Ganguly’s phone was switched off.

“Sourav even spoke about the possibility of a tie-up between the TCA and his academy in Kolkata. It looks like an attempt to return the favour if the TCA helps him,” the source added. With Dalmiya set to represent the CAB in Mumbai, Ganguly is expected to be busy finding a ‘friend’ over the next few days.
