Zhang Yimou is one of China’s most famous film directors and on Friday he probably became the country’s most well known international figure to cough up a hefty fine for breaking the Communist country’s single-child policy.
Zhang paid $1.2 million (7.48 million Yuan) for fathering three children — two sons and a daughter — with his wife Chen Ting when the law allows only one.
Zhang, director of movies like Red Sorghum, House of Flying Daggers and the recent Flowers of War, admitted only in December to have violated the country’s strict rule. His confession followed months of rumours that he had fathered as many as seven children. The case took more than six months to investigate. Couple’s unwillingness to cooperate have hampered the probes.
