China’s computer hackers are enrolling in online schools to learn to break into computers, steal information, and in a recent trend, plant Chinese flags to protest on foreign websites.

The government-run China Daily reported on Tuesday that hacker training has transformed into a shadowy industry that generated a revenue of 238 million Renminbi last year, and caused a loss of one billion dollars from stolen banking data and server damages.

Students investing a 100 yuan in school fees can make a fortune from hacking, the paper quoted an IT security consultant for hackerbase.com as saying.

Chinese hackers are frequently blamed for cyber attacks on foreign websites. Earlier this year, Toronto researchers claimed China-based cyber spies had invaded websites and accessed classified information in 103 nations including India and computers in the office of exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama.
