US President Donald Trump will announce on Thursday plans to withdraw from the Paris climate deal, a US official told AFP, signalling a policy shift with wide-ranging repercussions for the climate and America’s ties with its allies.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said Trump will confirm America’s “withdrawal” during a statement in the White House Rose Garden.

Trump is set to argue that the agreement is a bad deal for Americans.

The White House has told allies it was signed by President Barack Obama out of “desperation”.

Although details and the timeframe are still unclear, Trump will argue he is keeping a campaign promise to “put American workers first”.
