Unidentified Filipino gunmen on Friday shot dead a Taiwanese tourist and kidnapped his wife from a remote part of Malaysia which saw a violent Philippine militant incursion earlier this year.

Fifty-seven-year-old Lim Min Hsu was found dead with two bullet wounds on his chest, while her 58-year-old wife An Wei Chang was abducted from Pom Pom Island, a popular scuba diving location in the eastern state of Sabah on Borneo island.

The gunmen arrived in a boat and raided the resort hardly a kilometre away from an army base at about 1 am. They fled towards?Mataking island close to southern Philippines, police said.

Malaysia has launched a massive sea and air hunt to identify and hunt down the group behind the raid. All sea routes into neighbouring southern Philippines have been cut.

More than 200 heavily-armed fighters landed by boat along the same stretch of Sabah coast in February in a bizarre bid to support their ageing leader, Jamalulu Kiram III, a self-proclaimed Philippine sultan who had staked a claim to the area.

After a nearly month-long stand-off, Malaysian armed forces moved in to clear out guerrilla fighters. Sixty-eight of the militants were killed, 173 were arrested in the incident.
