(CPPCC) National Committee, China's top political advisory body, adopted a member list for the 12th CPPCC National Committee.
Chan's - who is among the more well-known Chinese actors in Hollywood - nomination to the top government body comes within weeks of his comment that the US was more corrupt than China.
During a recent interview to a Chinese television channel, the Hong Kong resident called America "the most corrupt country in the world". While Chan, known to be a supporter of the Communist Party of China (CPC), admitted that China is certainly dealing with corruption of its own, he noted that the country is "making progress," before he continued to take aim at the United States.
"Where does this Great Breakdown [financial crisis] come from?" he said in Chinese. "It started exactly from the world, the United States. When I was interviewed in the U.S., people asked me, I said the same thing."
Chan had once been quoted as saying, "Chinese people need to be controlled, otherwise they will do whatever they want," while defending China's decision to censor his films.
According to state-run Xinhua news agency, the proposal list of advisors included people from all walks of life in China, including officials, military officers, members of non-Communist parties, as well as representatives from economic, political, cultural, social and environmental fields, according to Ling Jihua, head of the United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee.
Representatives from religious circles and ethnic minority groups are also included in the final list, Ling said.
Of the 2,237 members on the final list, 893 are CPC members. People from ethnic minority groups hold 258 seats, and 399 female members have made the list.
Xinhua reported that members of the 12th CPPCC National Committee will attend the first session of the 12th National People's Congress, the national legislature, to hear and discuss the government work report, among other reports. The event will open on March 5.
