Normal life in most parts of Nepal was thrown out of gear on Tuesday due to a daylong strike called by a breakaway faction of the ruling Maoist party. The strike called by Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist affected vehicular movement and most business establishments, offices and educational
institutions in Kathmandu and elsewhere remained closed.

The party is demanding release of five members arrested in connection with murder of a journalist nine years ago and in protest against formation of a government led by the incumbent chief justice.

Three vehicles including two belonging to private television channels were vandalised by protestors in Kathmandu.
