A day after a suicide blast at Lahore’s Mall Road killed 16 people and injured 87 others, local police arrested 30 suspects and registered first information reports against four unidentified terrorists.
“We have arrested 30 suspects in connection with the Lahore’s Mall Road blast so far. Investigation is underway and we will reach the mastermind of this attack,” Pakistan’s Punjab government spokesman Zaeem Hussn Qadri told reporters.
According to the FIR, four suspected terrorists reached outside the Punjab Assembly building on the Mall Road to carry out the attack, while a protest march of chemists was underway.
The blast killed six police officials, including Lahore traffic police chief Ahmed Mobeen and senior superintendent of police Zahid Gondal.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif declared a day of mourning.
A faction of Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Jamaatul Ahrar claimed responsibility for the assault, which came three days after it announced it would carry out a series of attacks on government installations around the country.
The group had claimed a blast on March 27 last year at Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore that left 75 people dead.
