President Pranab Mukherjee held talks with his Nepali counterpart Bidhya Devi Bhandrai on Wednesday as he began a three–day state visit to Nepal.
The two sides expressed hope that Mukherjee’s visit will further cement bilateral relations.
They discussed a wide range of bilateral issues and expressed satisfaction over the present status of Nepal- India ties while underscoring regular interactions among the top political leadership, said Bharat Raj Poudyal, spokesperson of Nepal’s foreign ministry.
Mukherjee told Bhandari that he is eager to host her in New Delhi very soon.
After the meeting, the Indian President went to Indian Embassy in Kathmandu to participate in a reception hosted by the Indian Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae.
Earlier, President Bhandari received Mukherjee at the Tribhuvan International Airport.
Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, Minister for Urban Development Arjun Narsingh KC, political leaders and high-ranking officials of Nepalese army were also present to welcome Mukherjee, who is leading a 60-member delegation that includes parliamentarians and senior Indian officials.
The Indian president received a guard of honour from the Nepalese Army.
People waving national flags of both countries lined up at different places from the airport to the Shital Niwas, the presidential residence, to welcome Mukherjee.
The government has announced a public holiday in honour of the Indian president, who is on the first such trip after 18 years.
Mukherjee is scheduled to hold separate meetings with Vice President Nanda Kumar Pun and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.
President Bhandari will host a state banquet in honour of Mukherjee later on Wednesday.
