A 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island early on Wednesday, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The quake occurred at 12:50 am (1750 GMT Tuesday), 255 kilometres (160 miles) west of Padang at a depth of 39.7 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
