Indian professionals in Singapore have taken a lead in integrating with the city-state's populace and contributing to the development of the local Indian community, Singapore deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean has said.

"I would like to commend their initiative and welcome more of such efforts by business leaders to contribute to the community," said Teo in his keynote opening address at the IIMPACT 2013 global conference which opened on Friday.

He noted that the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) alumni have formed the Indian Business Leaders Roundtable (IBR) with the state-backed Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) to contribute to the local Indian community.

Teo said the IBR members were organising dialogue sessions to facilitate engagement between the business sector and the government.

The IBR members would also contribute their time and effort to SINDA activities and help to raise funds for SINDA, a state-funded educational institution for the Indian community.

IBR chairman Girija Pande said it was one way for newly-arrived Indian professionals to give back to the Singapore community, especially the local Indians.

Teo also noted the IIM alumni engagement in Singapore's business sector, pointing out the importance of the conference.

This conference was building on the strong ties between India and Singapore, and the long-standing connection of many IIM alumni with Singapore, he said.

Over 750 delegates from around the world are attending the conference, themed "New Frontiers".

"It is one of the largest and powerful gatherings of IIM alumni exploring a wide range of subjects," said Sanjiv Aiyar, President of the Pan IIM Alumni Association Singapore, the conference organisers, adding, the conference, to be addressed by 41 speakers, would become a regular event in Singapore.
