Police in the Pakistani port city of Karachi have arrested two men for killing a female relative and injuring a man in an incident of “honour killing”.

According to police officials, Nasreen, 36, was shot dead by her brother-in-law Ilyas and his son Qasim at Orangi Town in Karachi after they discovered a man leaving their home in the early hours of Monday.

On Tuesday, officials said they had arrested Ilyas and Qasim, who suspected Nasreen was having an affair with the man currently beinh treated at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

“Ilyas, with the help of his son, shot dead his sister-in- law Nasreen, who he suspected was having an affair with a man as her husband is working in Saudi Arabia,” senior superintendent police Akhter Farooq said.

“Moments after seeing the man, they fired at him. He is under treatment at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital,” the official said.

Police had arrested a young man in the same neighbourhood in April for slitting his teenage sister’s throat and watching her bleed to death. Hayat Khan used a kitchen knife to murder his 17-year-old sister Sumaira after he found her talking to a man on her mobile phone at their home.

Attacks targeting women for actions that reportedly affect the honour of the family have been recorded in cities across Pakistan. The government has taken some steps to curb the attacks but they have continued.
