The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday condemned the crackdown against protesters in Libya, called for an end to it and asked the Libyan government to “address the legitimate demands” of the people.

But it did not go for any of the tough measures sought by those appalled by the brutality of the Gaddafi regime’s response to protests — hundreds have died in what is being called “genocide” and “bloodbath”.

“They (SC members) condemned the violence and use of force against civilians, deplored the repression against peaceful demonstrators, and expressed deep regret at the deaths of hundreds of civilians,” said a Security Council statement.

The council also welcomed an earlier statement by the Arab League suspending the Libyan delegation from all its deliberations.
