Cruz “unliked” the post within a few minutes, but the damage had already been done.

Twitter has gotten many senior and respectable politicians into trouble, and Republican Ted Cruz is the latest to join that long and inglorious list.

The Texas senator, who was one of the candidates in last year’s presidential race, liked a two-minute porn clip on Twitter before soon undoing the action. The video, shared by the handle @SexuallPosts, purportedly showed two women and a man engaged in sexual acts.

The account that shared the video quickly realised who had liked their post, with Gizmodo reporting that @SexuallPosts tweeted: “Thanks for watching ted!”

Cruz’s staff claimed that his account had been hacked. Catherine Frazier, his senior communications adviser, tweeted: “The offensive tweet posted on @tedcruz account earlier has been removed by staff and reported to Twitter.”

But the damage had been done.

Many tweeple saw the funny side of it and Cruz became the butt of jokes online. Even the senator’s wife was dragged into the mess — many pointed out that one of the actresses in the clip bore a startling resemblance to Heidi Cruz.

This is not the first time Cruz has gotten embroiled in a porn-related incident — last year, when he was running for president, his campaign had to retract an advert attacking Marco Rubio after learning the team had hired a softcore pornstar.

He was also part of a legal team that argued that Americans don’t have the right to use sex toys.
