First US commercial flight in more than 50 years lands in Cuban city
SANTA CLARA: The first commercial flight between the US and Cuba in more than a half century landed on Wednesday in the central city of Santa Clara, re-establishing regular air service severed at the height of the Cold War. Cheers broke out in the cabin of JetBlue flight 387 as the plane touched down. The arrival of the Airbus A320 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, opened another chapter in the Obama administration’s efforts to improve ties and increase trade and travel with the former Cold War foe. The Obama administration hopes regular scheduled flights will usher in an era of more routine travel to and from the Communist-ruled island which had been cut off from most Americans due to a 55-year-old trade embargo.
