Stabbing incidents mar Notting Hill carnival
LONDON: The colourful, two-day Notting Hill Carnival attracts thousands of people, but this year’s edition was marred by six stabbing incidents, more than 100 arrests and more than 400 patients being treated, including 71 in hospital. Led by Britain’s West Indian community, this year’s carnival has seen Scotland Yard making elaborate arrangements, including use of a facial recognition system for the first time to nab serial offenders. Yard spokesperson for the carnival, Superintendent Robyn Williams, said: “This weekend is the highlight of the year, not only for the Caribbean community, but also for many visitors from London and the rest of the country. The Met has worked hard to ensure that carnival is a safe and enjoyable weekend for everyone who attends and I would ask all carnival-goers to enjoy this family event and make sure that you follow officers’ and stewards’ instructions.”
