A half century from Virat Kohli helped India beat Pakistan by six wickets on Saturday at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens in cricket’s World Twenty20 tournament.
Kohli hit an unbeaten 55 as India comfortably chased down Pakistan’s total of 118 for five, reaching their target with 13 balls remaining in a match reduced to 18 overs per side because of rain.
Over 16: Dhoni puts the result beyond doubt with a trademark six, then knocks off the winning run.
Over 15: 7 off the over. 106/4
Over 14: 8 off the over. 99/4
Over 13: 7 off Afridi. 91/4
Over 12: 10 off the over and Yuvraj’s wicket. 84/4
11.6 Wahab Riaz to Yuvraj Singh, OUT
That is a rubbish ball, short and just outside off, but Yuvraj mis-times the pull and hits it straight to the fielder at cow corner! They check for a no-ball but Wahab’s front foot is fine. Sami barely had to move to take the catch.
Over 11: A great over for India, that. A boundary and a six from Kohli. 74/3
Over 10: 6 off Wahab Riaz. 60/3
Over 9: 8 off Shoaib Malik’s over. 54/3
Over 8: 6 off the Afridi over. 46/3
Over 7: 12 off Sami. 40/3
Over 6: 5 off Afridi. 28/3
Over 5: 5 runs and two wickets in that Sami over. A big one for Pakistan 23/3
4.4 Mohammad Sami to Raina, OUT
Bowled him! Raina has played on too and his leg stump has taken a battering! Raina jumped back and across to a short of a length ball around the off stump and tried to defend, he closed the face a touch and the ball cannoned off the inside edge and uprooted leg stump! Raina looks a bit bewildered. How the over has turned for Sami!
4.3 Mohammad Sami to Dhawan, OUT
Bowled him! Dhawan has played on! The ball was short of a length on middle and off, Dhawan stayed in his crease and tried to steer to third man, he did not have the room and bottom edged it on to his stumps
Over 4: 2 runs off Irfan. 18/1
Over 3: 2 runs and the wicket of Rohit Sharma off Amir. 16/1
2.1 Mohammad Amir to Sharma, OUT
Caught at cover! Rohit tries to loft down the ground but the ball grips the pitch and he ends up lofting it really high in the
air towards the off side. Three fielders could have caught it - cover, extra cover, and mid-off - but Malik called for it from cover and judged it well. Tumbled to the ground as he caught it.
Over 2: 10 off Irfan. 14/0
Over 1: 4 off Amir’s first over. 4/0
India need 119 to win after Shoaib Malik and Ahmed Shehzad helped Pakistan post 118/5 in the rain-curtailed World T20 match at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens on Saturday.
Earlier, Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bowl first against Pakistan. The rain relented but the wet outfield forced officials to reduce the contest to an 18-overs-a-side game between the neighbours.
Malik hit 26 off 16 balls and Shehzad hit 25 off 28 on a turning, tricky pitch to post the total.
For India, Ashish Nehra picked up a wicket and conceded 20 runs in his 4 overs. Jasprit Bumrah, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya also picked up a wicket each.
