Police say Lebanese troops have shot and killed a fugitive during the hunt for the killers of four soldiers in northeastern Lebanon.
A police statement issued yesterday said the dead man was armed and tried to flee. The state news agency added that troops seized stolen vehicles, weapons and a drug lab in the raids.
It said 35 people wanted on various outstanding warrants have been arrested by troops who deployed in the Baalbek and Hermel regions backed by helicopters.
Four soldiers were killed in an ambush in the region on Monday in an apparent revenge attack by clansmen. The eastern Bekaa Valley's northern part has for decades been notoriously lawless, with Shiite clans holding sway.
