An elderly man lost control of his car on Thursday and slammed into a building hosting a Hanukkah party for families in a New York suburb, injuring 14 people, police said.
The man, 78, hit a parked car before ploughing through a plate glass window of the building where Chabad of the Five Towns, an Orthodox Jewish community organization, was hosting its annual Chanukah Wonderland festival in the town of Woodmere, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) southeast of New York city.
"There were approximately 150 people in the building, 14 being reported injured, and four of those in serious condition," Nassau County police officer Mary Verna told AFP.
The injured, ranging from 18 months to 40 years old, mostly suffered blunt force trauma and were transported to area hospitals, she said.
Thursday was the fifth day of the eight-day Jewish holiday, known as the festival of lights, and the Chabad celebration featured events geared for children.
