An oil drilling platform on the East China Sea leaned 45 degrees to leave 2 workers missing and 34 trapped.
The incident happened last night at 11 pm (local time).
The two missing people fell into water and the remaining were trapped on the platform No 3 of Shengli Oilfield in Dongying, Shandong Province, state-run media Xinhua reported today.
The platform is located some five nautical miles to the coast where the depth of water is seven meters.
The Ministry of Transport has sent rescue teams to the site.
Strong wind prevented rescue boats from docking at the platform. Two helicopters were searching for the missing, Zhai Jiugang, an official with the China Marine Search and Rescue Centre, said.
The valve of the oil rig has been shut down and the trapped people on the platform are reported safe, the management of Shengli Oilfield said.
