At least 25 people including 15 prison guards were injured today in a clash with madarssa students over the use of a playing ground adjacent to high security Dhaka Central Jail, officials said.
Jail officials said a group of students of Bokshibazar Alia Madarssa, who were playing cricket, attacked the jail guards when the security personnel went there to play volleyball and practice cycling at the playing ground owned by the jail authorities leaving 15 jail policemen wounded.
Officer in charge of the local police station Nabo Jyoti Khisha said several madarssa students too were injured and at least two of them required treatment at Dhaka medical College Hospital.
"We own the field but we always allowed the students of the neighbouring madarssa and Nabakumar Institute (another nearby school) to play there alongside our guards," Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Major Shamsul Haider Siddique told PTI.
But the madarssa principal told police they received a home ministry decision allocating the field to the madarssa with a request to allow the jail guards to use it for their parades and games.
"The situation has eased down and we are preparing to sit down with all concerned to settle the matter," the local police chief said.
