At least three pro-freedom Tibetan protesters have self-immolated themselves in the past three days, exiled Tibetan groups said, again bringing into focus the spreading unrest in China’s southwestern region.
According to Free Tibet, 18-year-old teenager Dorjee set himself a fire near a government office while shouting anti-government slogans of Aba prefecture of Sichuan province on Monday.
The London-based organisation claimed in a statement that Dorjee’s body was removed from the spot by security personnel.
The incident was neither denied nor confirmed by the Chinese government, currently in the middle of the annual session of its parliament, the National People’s Congress.
The death of Dorjee comes a day after a mother of four died after setting herself on fire on Sunday in Aba, according to reports.
News agency AFP reported that another teenager — a girl reported to be aged between 16 and 19 — set herself alight on Saturday in the northwestern province of Gansu, which borders Sichuan and also has a large population of ethnic Tibetans.
