Four Afghans who escaped an immigration detention centre in eastern Indonesia this week have been found dead, police said on Thursday.
The four were among 13 Afghans and five Myanmar nationals who escaped from the detention centre in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara province, on Wednesday.
"Fishermen and people who live on the coast found the four bodies floating on the sea. Three were found on Wednesday night and one on Thursday morning," East Nusa Tenggara police spokesman Otto G Riwu said.
"We're coordinating with the Afghan embassy whether they want the bodies to be returned to Afghanistan or buried in Kupang."
The cause of death was unknown, he said.
The five Myanmar migrants and four Afghans had been found but police were still searching for the five other escapees from Afghanistan.
The migrants had been arrested for trying to illegally enter Australia by boat.
