Turkey's Prime Minister said a Kurdish rebel attack has killed four Turkish soldiers near the border with Iraq. Recep Tayyip Erdogan said a noncommissioned officer and three privates were killed Sunday in the province of Hakkari.

Provincial Governor Muammer Turker said the rebels threw a hand grenade at troops returning from an anti-rebel operation. He says the military then launched a new operation backed by airpower.

The government has been trying to win public support for ending the decades old conflict with the Kurdish rebel group known as the PKK, but it has yet to announce a plan for doing so. Tens of thousands have been killed in southeast Turkey since the PKK began fighting for the region's autonomy in 1984.
