At least 99 people were killed and over 88 injured in a night club inferno and two separate coal mine accidents in China, police said on Sunday.

Forty-three people were killed and 88 injured when a blaze ripped through an unlicensed nightclub in the southern boom city of Shenzhen on Saturday night.

Police have detained 13 people, including the owner, in connection with the fire.

Wang Jing turned herself in on Sunday after the general manager, deputy general manager, safety officer, technician and performers, were detained, Xinhua news agency reported.

The fire broke out at the ‘King of the Dancers’ club in Longgang District, when more than 300 people were watching a performance in a hall.

According to latest reports, 59 of the injured were being treated in hospital.

An initial investigation showed that fireworks burnt during the performance ignited the flammable material in the ceiling. The fire then spread quickly across the hall.

“The performer was shooting a gun, trying to shoot off some fireworks. He was aiming at the ceiling but a piece of cloth caught fire,” witness Liu Caihong, 31, told AFP outside the club.

“Everybody started running out.”

Liu, who had numerous cuts on her body, said she still had no news of her younger brother and 18 friends who attended the performance with her on the third floor of the club.

Meanwhile, at least 37 miners were killed in a gas outburst at a coal mine in central China’s Henan Province early Sunday. The accident happened at Xinfeng No 2 Coal Mine, southwest of Dengfeng City, when 108 workers were underground.

A total of 64 miners escaped and seven others were rescued from the pit, Xinhua reported.

In the second tragedy, rescuers on Sunday found 14 more bodies at a coal mine in northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, bringing the death toll from a fire on Saturday to 19. A rescue headquarters spokesman said 12 miners remained missing.
