A magnitude-6.1 earthquake hit off the east coast of Honshu, Japan, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported on Wednesday on its website.

The quake, which had its epicentre some 537 km northeast of Tokyo and 190 km east of Morioka, Honshu island, occurred at 5:57 am local time on Thursday (1957 GMT Wednesday), with a depth of 11.2 km, Xinhua cited the USGS as stating.

No tsunami warning, however, has so far been issued.

Meanwhile, the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11 has so far left 13,392 people dead, while 15,133 still remained unaccounted for till Wednesday evening, the National Police Agency said.

About 139,000 survivors were now staying in 2,300 shelters across the country, Xinhua reported.
