An earthquake measuring 6.0 on the richter scale hit off the Indonesian island of Java late on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said, but no tsunami warning was immediately issued.

The earthquake hit at 9:45pm local time (1445 GMT), the USGS said, some 110 kilometres (68 miles) south of the city of Banjar in West Java, at a depth of 35 kilometres.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity in the region.

A 6.9-magnitude quake that struck in the Banda Sea in December sparked panic but there were no reports of damage or casualties.
