The Maoists in Nepal on Friday gave a week’s ultimatum to the government to address their demands or face a more aggressive — read violent — agitation.

The second and final day of the blockade of Singha Durbar, the official seat of Nepal government, by cadres of the United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist who are demanding ‘civilian supremacy’ ended peacefully on Friday evening.

“We want the government to address our demands in a week or else face a more aggressive agitation,” said former Prime Minister and chairman of UCPN-Maoist Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ at a rally here on conclusion of second-phase of its agitation.

The Maoists are demanding an apology from President Ram Baran Yadav for his refusal to approve removal of the army chief by the UCPN (M)-led government. The move had led to toppling of Prachanda’s government in May this year.

The party also wants that the issue should be discussed in the parliament.

Prachanda, however, stated that his party was committed to peace and drafting of the new constitution soon. Without naming anyone he added that there was a conspiracy by a certain section to dissolve the constituent assembly.
