At least 17 LTTE cadres were killed in fierce clashes across volatile north as Sri Lankan airforce jets targeted rebel strongholds, officials said on Wednesday.
Air Force fighter jets attacked some areas occupied by the LTTE militants in Kilinochchi, the defence ministry said.
The fighter aircraft also targeted an area south of Muhamalai FDL in Jaffna peninsula this afternoon, it said.
In the third air attack on Wednesday, the jets carried out a strike on a sea tiger base located one km southeast of Nayaru lagoon in the rebel stronghold of Mulaithivu, the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said.
Air Force pilots confirmed that the air strike was a total success, it said.
In ground clashes, troops killed one LTTE cadre in Janakapura North in North-east Welioya on Tuesday, the MCNS said adding three rebels were shot dead in an confrontation at Udaiyadi area of Mannar on Tuesday.
Separately, the security forces gunned down three Tiger rebels in Nedunkandal area of Mannar on Tuesday, the officials said adding two LTTE militants were killed in Navathkulam in the region on the same day.
In another incident, army troops killed five LTTE rebels in Periyamadukulam area in Mannar on Tuesday, the military said.
At three tiger rebels were gunned down in Kovitkunchu area in Vavuniya on Tuesday, the MCNS said.
