An American was detained at the airport in Peshawar city of northwest Pakistan today after security officials found bullets in his luggage, police said.
The American was set to fly from Peshawar to Islamabad. He was questioned after being detained, police officials said.
Police contacted the Foreign Office in Islamabad after the American claimed to be a diplomat.
Officials told the media that more than a dozen bullets were found in his luggage.
One report said a pistol was also found in the American’s baggage but this could not be independently confirmed.
The US Embassy said it was looking into the reports.
The US has a large consulate in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.
Pakistan-US ties plunged to a new low in November last year, when a cross-border Nato air strike killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.
The government has ordered a parliamentary review of bilateral ties.
