At least 14 dead in Colombia earthquake

world Updated: May 27, 2008 13:22 IST

The toll in Colombia's May 24 earthquake rose to 14 Tuesday, with 65 people injured and more than 6,000 forced out of their home, Spain's EFE news agency reported.

Director of Red Cross' Colombian unit for disaster relief Walter Cote told the news agency at least nine of the 14 deaths were due to landslides and house collapses.

The quake occurred at 2.21 p.m. Saturday, triggering at least 10 landslides that buried a large number of cars on the highway between Bogota and the central city of Villavicencio, capital of Meta province.

Police said that traffic on the Bogota-Villavicencio highway opened Monday.
