The arrest of a top terrorist and explosive expert in a raid by Bangladesh authorities triggered his wife to try to blow herself up to prevent his detention.

As elite anti-crime force personnel went to arrest Jahedul Islam Sumon alias Mizan, a top militant of banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), from Mirpur area his wife set off a bomb which sent the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel running for cover.

In the blast last night, Mizan's wife Sharmin Haque Lata was injured alongwith her two children. But after the explosions police managed to nab him.

Police were on the trail of the terrorist for the past two years. Mizan was earlier sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by a court in absentia. And at the time of his arrest, the militant was busy trying to re-group JMB and trained more militants on explosives.

"After his arrest, Mizan apparently gave a coded signal to his wife, who detonated a high power explosives inside the house which injured her blew her hand off," a RAB spokesman told PTI.

The woman was also arrested and taken to a hospital. The owner of the house said Mizan rented the second floor of the four-storey apartment last month identifying him as a construction businessman.

JMB's founder Shaikh Abdur Rahman and his second in command Siddikul Islam 'Bangla Bhai' and four other top leaders were executed in 2007.
