UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will arrive in Pakistan on Saturday to assess relief and rescue work in the flood-hit country, a media report said on Friday.

Pakistan is grappling with its worst ever floods that have left over 1,600 people dead and affected over 14 million people.

The secretary-general will assess losses due to the floods and oversee relief and rescue operations, Xinhua reported citing PTV.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has welcomed Ban's visit and said he is happy that the secretary-general is visiting Pakistan when the nation is facing such a tough situation.

The UN has also appealed for nearly $460 million in aid for victims of the devastating floods.

US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry will also visit Pakistan Aug 18 to review the situation, officials said.
