Bangla police arrest Jamaat's city chief over campus unrest

world Updated: Feb 11, 2010 16:01 IST

Bangladesh police on Thursday arrested a city chief of Jamaat-e-Islam over campus violence at Rajshahi that killed a student and injured several others, official said.

A senior police official told PTI that they arrested Jamaat's Rajshahi city chief Atait Rahman for his alleged involvement in the attack on Bangladesh Chhatra League (ruling Awami League's student front) by Islami Chhattra Shibir (the student wing of Jamaat).

Islami Chhattra Shibir is an ally of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of ex-premier Khaleda Zia.

The development came as authorities ordered suspension of eight police officials for "negligence of duty" during the violence at the Rajshahi University campus that killed Chhatra League worker Faruk Hossain, sparking a countrywide campus tension.

Elite anti-crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police earlier yesterday arrested some 45 Shibir men who forcefully entered Rajshahi University while Chhatra League filed a case accusing some 600 people for the violence.

Hossain, a fourth year student, was hacked to death by Shibir activists in attacks on different Rajshahi University dormitories on Tuesday.

The incident infuriated the Awami League with treasury bench lawmakers yesterday demanding ban on Jamaat and its student wing.
