Bhutan PM’s first India visit begins

In his first trip abroad as the new prime minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay will be paying an official visit to India from August 30 to September 4.
India is set to roll out a financial assistance of Rs 5,400 crore, which includes the traditional support for Bhutan’s five year plan and Rs 500 crore as a economic stimulus package for the neighbour.
The prime minister is accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising foreign minister Lyonpo Rinzin Dorje and senior officials. Besides firming up the closer ties, the accent of the visit is on economics. Tobgay has won the elections, focusing a great deal on the economic troubles of the country.
India is set to give Rs 4,500 crore for Bhutan’s 11th five yearplan, Rs 500 crore as an economic stimulus plan and Rs 400 crore for spill-over activities from the previous five year plan.
Tobgay’s programme includes calls on President Pranab Mukherjee, vice president Hamid Ansari, and a meeting followed by lunch with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He will also meet UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid, finance minister P Chidambaram among others.
The PM will have a joint meeting with the three industry chambers Assocham, FICCI and CII and will also visit Hyderabad on September 3.
