Brazil's Environmental Minister says a "climate apartheid" between rich and poor nations could hinder a global warming deal this year.

Carlos Minc says the world "unfortunately is far from reaching an agreement" because of differences in the positions of rich and poor countries.

He told the official Agencia Brasil news service on Sunday that it is not clear a global warming deal will be reached before December's world climate conference in Denmark, when the agreement is expected to be signed.

Delegates from more than 170 countries are meeting at a UN conference in Germany to craft a global agreement to govern the emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases.
