British police launched a murder investigation on Tuesday after the discovery of a woman's remains at one of Queen Elizabeth II's country estates on New Year's Day.

The body was found in woodland Sunday by a member of the public out walking on the 19,770-acre (8,000-hectare) Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, eastern England.

"The circumstances suggest this is a murder case and we are looking at missing persons reports and cold cases both locally and nationwide," said detective chief inspector Jes Fry, of Norfolk Constabulary.

The royal family spent Christmas and New Year at Sandringham although celebrations were interrupted when Prince Philip, the queen's husband, was treated in hospital after a heart scare.
