Nigel Evans, deputy speaker of the British parliament, was arrested Saturday over allegations that he raped two men. Evans, who was released after being questioned all day, denied the charges on Sunday and said he has no intentions of stepping down.

Evans, a 55-year-old gay politician, is accused of raping two men in their 20s between 2009 and March 2013. He was arrested from the secluded Welsh village of Pendleton and was later let out on bail until June 19. The offences were said to have taken place in the village, which has only a handful of houses and a pub.

Both PM David Cameron and speaker John Bercow were informed of the arrest, although police are yet to press charges. Police said Evans was held on "suspicion of sexual assault."

The popular MP from the ruling Conservative party, described the allegations as "completely false" and expressed his "sense of incredulity at these events."
