Britain's defense ministry says a soldier has been killed by an explosion in Afghanistan's southern Helmand province.

The soldier, from 1st Battalion The Coldstream Guards, died while on patrol on Thursday morning near Camp Bastion, the main British base in Afghanistan.

The Ministry of Defense said on Friday that the soldier's family has been informed. His name has not been released.
The bodies of two British servicemen killed in the restive Helmand province on October 1 and 5 were due to arrive in Britain later on Friday.
Since the start of operations in October 2001, 221 British forces personnel have died in the country.
